The Story Behind Concrete Studio

Born in Cape Town during the quiet of Covid, Concrete Studio began with a single concrete pot and a curiosity that refused to stay small.

Founded by Charmaine Nolte — entrepreneur, mom of two, and lifelong seeker of opportunity — Concrete Studio grew from knowing nothing about concrete to falling completely in love with it.

Concrete Studio is built on collaboration. We bring together skilled artisans — concrete experts, carpenters, and community makers — united by a belief that beautiful things are made better together. From dining tables and basins to firepits, planters, and handcrafted wooden pieces, every item carries the mark of human hands.

We also love a challenge. Custom work is at the heart of what we do — whether it's a one-of-a-kind piece for your home or something truly unexpected, like the massive concrete dollos we once built for a shoe store. If you can dream it, we'll find a way to make it.

Our work finds its home with homeowners, interior designers, lodges, and restaurants across South Africa — wherever people believe that beautiful spaces deserve beautiful things.

“Concrete Studio was born from curiosity, creativity, and the belief that beautiful things don’t always start with expertise — sometimes they simply start with the courage to try. What began with one concrete pot during Covid became a journey of learning, collaboration and creating pieces that bring permanence, texture and character into people’s spaces. At the heart of it all is still the same excitement for making something by hand and seeing an idea come to life.”— Charmaine Nolte, Founder of Concrete Studio

Caring for Concrete

Concrete is a strong and durable material, but like all quality furniture and handcrafted surfaces, it should be treated with care and consideration.

Our pieces are sealed to help protect them during everyday use, however concrete remains a natural material that will develop character over time. Small markings, subtle variations and signs of use form part of the beauty and lived experience of handcrafted concrete.

To help care for your piece, we recommend:

  • Wiping spills as soon as possible
  • Avoiding harsh chemical cleaners
  • Using coasters, placemats and protective pads where appropriate
  • Avoiding dragging heavy or sharp objects across surfaces
  • Cleaning with a soft cloth and mild soap solution

For outdoor pieces, natural weathering may occur over time depending on exposure to the elements.

With the right care, concrete ages beautifully and is designed to be enjoyed for many years to come.
